Ask a Pol asks:

What do you think about the DEA — Drug Enforcement Administration — trying to reschedule marijuana?

Key Braun:

“That doesn’t surprise me, because it's kinda cascading across the country, the nullification anyway,” Sen. Mike Braun exclusively told Ask a Pol. “Where it ends up and what they do with it remains to be seen.”

Caught our ear per relaxing Indiana cannabis laws:

“It's gonna be a moot point here in a few years anyway,” Braun told us. “It looks like we're just sliding along with the process.”

SAFER Banking Act?

Have you looked at the SAFER Banking Act?

“That’s all related to it as well, because they want us to make sure they can bank and it currently has a Class I classification,” Braun said. “Makes it tough, so…”

TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Mike Braun

SCENE: Sen. Braun exits a tram underneath the US Capitol as he heads to vote on the Senate floor when Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo catches up with him.

Matt Laslo: “Senator, have you seen the DEA effort to reschedule marijuana?”

Mike Braun: “I just saw — where the Biden administration is taking it from Class I to III?”

ML: “Yeah, what do you make of that?”

MB: “I think that — that doesn’t surprise me, because it's kinda cascading across the country, the nullification anyway. Where it ends up and what they do with it remains to be seen. I certainly heard they were considering it. Did they say they're doing it for sure?”

ML: “There's going to be an open comment period. I think the FDA…”

MB: “That doesn’t really surprise me.”

ML: “But Indiana, you guys haven't really moved on it, but you have Illinois…”

MB: “We’re surrounded by every state now…”

ML: “Oh I know, yeah.”

MB: “…that has medical and recreational — Michigan and Illinois — and it's medical in, I think, Ohio and Kentucky.”

ML: “So would it make sense for your state to have a more federal uniform thing or leave it to states?”

MB: “I think at this stage of the game, states have been taking it on. It's gonna be a moot point here in a few years anyway. And it looks like we're just sliding along with the process.”

ML: “Have you looked at SAFER Banking Act?”

MB: “That’s all related to it as well, because they want us to make sure they can bank and it currently has a Class I classification, makes it tough, so…”

ML: “Yeah?

Braun starts walking away.

ML: “Preciate ya.”
